Club approach to group riding in lockdown (November 2020)

As you’re aware, England entered national lockdown on Thurs 5 November until at least 2 December which impacts group riding.

But all is not lost – we don’t have to ride alone as we are allowed to ride with members of our household or, if we’re on our own, ONE other person from outside of our household (children under school age don’t count in the number).

The club wants to help people ride – our club aim is after all to get more people out on their bikes!

Our club position:

There will be NO official club rides in any section (As, Inters, Bs, Social Series).

By ‘official’ we mean regular rides that are advertised on our comms channels (to either members or non-members) like we used to pre-lockdown, and we won’t guarantee that any ride will go out every week or fortnight.

Instead, because our club aim is to ‘get more people out on their bikes’, we’re happy for people to ride informally, having organised meeting times and venues etc yourselves using whatever communication method you choose, and provided you adhere to national lockdown restrictions (e.g. only riding with your household or, if you’re on your own, ONE other person (not inc. children under school age in the count). And making sure you adhere to social distancing if you’re lucky enough to find a cafe doing takeaway service.

How we’re helping you ride:

We are also happy to help people ride informally with others (in case they have no way of contacting club members to organise a ride).

To do that we’ve created a Google Sheet where you can suggest a ride (adding extra info about suggested dates, distance and expected return time if you like), or look to see if you could join anyone who’s suggested a ride already. Full details on how the sheet works are on Tab 1 of the sheet.

If you are using a phone or tablet you will probably need to install the free Google Sheets app first. Once you have installed the app you can access this sheet by using the link which will be emailed out or is on the Facebook members group.

We ask that you refrain from simply posting a ride in the Facebook group thread, or creating an event in the Facebook Group.

NB – Thanks must go to Christine Bell for creating a Google sign-on sheet for the Mountain Goat rides which I’ve very definitely ‘taken inspiration’ from for the other ride sections!

Before you go…..

We hope you are able to get out on your bikes despite lockdown – exercise and social contact is so beneficial to our physical and mental health.

But….please remember that if you’re wearing Otley CC kit you are representing the club even if it’s not an official ride, so please don’t do anything to risk damaging the reputation of the club. Thanks!
