Social Series half-day rides – Sunday 8 September

Welcome to our half-day Social Series ride options for Sunday 8 September.

If you’re thinking of joining us for the first time check out some of our ride reports to read about the fun we have on our rides. Our motto is #NoOneGetsLeftBehind and we love cafe stops as much as we like cycling! You can ride with us twice before deciding whether to join the club.

We meet in Otley (at the Buttercross, in the market square) at 9.00 for a 9.15am start. All rides will return to the Fleece pub in Otley by about 13.00 and we hope you will stick around for a chat at the end of the ride.

Both our Gentle and Stretching rides are doable on a mountain bike, hydrid or road bike – #AnyBikeWillDo. And we welcome e-bikes on any ride.

If the rides below aren’t what you’re looking for check out our B Rides, Intermediate Rides and A Rides options on Sundays. And we have informal rides on Wednesday nights and Thursday daytimes. And that’s not all – we also have Mountain Bike rides, Mountain Goat rides (for roadies who like hills) and many more informal member-only rides posted by members on the Facebook group.

Gentle Ride: North Rigton for Smarties (19 miles)

Route: This route is the normal North Rigton route but with an added loop via Weeton on the way out. This route goes along the back roads to Huby and then up Gravelly Hill to Almscliffe Crag (with plenty of stops on the way) before a gentle descent to the pub. We return to Almscliffe Crag and then take a right hand turn so that we can descend on the back roads to Otley.

Stretching Ride (1): Bolton Bridge  (23 miles)

Route: This is a shorter ‘out and back’ ride to Bolton Abbey with the café stop at Bolton Bridge. This can be useful for anyone trying a stretching ride for the first time.

Stretching Ride (2): Netherby (23 miles)

Route: This is an ‘out and back’ route through Castley and Weeton with a loop around Kirkby Overblow. You can do the route clockwise or anti-clockwise, depending if you want to go up or down ‘the cliff’.

Cafe: There aren’t many options out this way (if you have any suggestions let us know) so we go to Stables Bar at the Larkham Leisure caravan park – they open especially for us so if we want to go there we need to let them know in advance and we need to turn up!


Strenuous Ride: The Strid via Langbar and Cow and Calf (30 miles)

Unless anyone wants to put on a longer ride instead / as well.

Route: This route will join up two excellent hill climbs into one beautiful circuit. The route will go out from Otley via Asquith and then will take the “gentle” approach to Langbar to capture your first amazing views of our fantastic Yorkshire landscape. After a steep descent (do make sure your brakes are ready for this ride…might be time to pop into Chevin Cycles?!) there is tea at the delightful Strid Tea Rooms. The return leg will take you through Addingham before tackling the final big climb of the day – the Cow and Calf for another brilliant photo opportunity before the gentle return to Otley via Menston.
