Sunday July 28 sees the launch of the first Otley Cycling Family Fun Day, to be held on Garnett’s Field between 10am and 2pm.
Organised by Otley Town Council in conjunction with Otley Cycle Club and Chevin Cycles, the event will include a host of things to do, all designed to encourage families to get their bikes from the shed, dust them off and come and join in the fun.
Children at the event will be able to test their skills on ‘easy’ and ‘hard’ grass circuits – laps will be time-monitored enabling them to see their improvement throughout the morning, and Otley Cycling Club trainers will give tips on how to improve bike skills.
Whether visitors push or ride their bikes to the event, they’ll certainly be able to ride them home: Chevin Cycles mechanics will be on hand to give bikes a free road-safety check, including gears, brakes and tyres.
Adults will be able to sample hybrid electric bikes, and there will be treats in the form of free coffee from a vintage van provided by high-end cycling gear brand Rapha.
Throughout the morning there will be a series of guide-led rides that will allow up to eight cyclists (both adults and children) to sample Otley’s safer, quieter cycling routes north of the river. Women-only Breeze rides will also be held. Visitors will be able to sign up on the day for rides providing space is available but pre-booking is recommended. To book mixed rides call in to Otley Town Council’s Core in Orchard Gate or call 01943 466335. Women-only rides can be pre-booked via British Cycling.
Other treats include stalls and information on cycling, plus a sticker art tent and displays of vintage bikes.
Guests are advised to bring water and snacks to eat, or to enjoy the farmers’ market in Market Place held on the same afternoon. Children will only be able to take part in circuits if they are wearing a helmet. Both adults and children will be required to wear a helmet for all the led rides.
