Social Series Half-day Rides – Sunday 16 June

Welcome to our half-day Social Series ride options for Sunday 16 June.

If you’re thinking of joining us for the first time check out some of our ride reports to read about the fun we have on our rides. Our motto is #NoOneGetsLeftBehind and we love cafe stops as much as we like cycling! You can ride with us twice before deciding whether to join the club.

We meet at the Buttercross Market Sq in the middle of Otley at 9.00 for a 9.15am start. All rides will return to the Fleece pub in Otley by about 13.00 and we hope you will stick around for a chat at the end of the ride.

Both our Gentle and Stretching rides are doable on a mountain bike, hydrid or road bike – #AnyBikeWillDo. And we welcome e-bikes on any ride.

If the rides below aren’t what you’re looking for check out our B Rides, Intermediate Rides and A Rides options on Sundays. And we have informal rides on Wednesday nights and Thursday daytimes. And that’s not all – we also have Mountain Bike rides, Mountain Goat rides (for roadies who like hills) and many more informal member-only rides posted by members on the Facebook group.

We’re always looking for ride leaders, so if you’re interested in leading one of these rides get in touch via the event on the club Facebook Group or email: otleypresident@gmail.com

Gentle Ride: North Rigton (19 miles)

There are a few climbs to North Rigton via Almscliffe Cragg but you will be surprised how accessible this route is, we take the hills in a very steady manner.

This is a lovely route which goes along the back roads to via Weeton. After Almscliffe Crag there is a downhill stretch to the pub. We return to Almscliffe Crag and then take a right hand turn so that we can descend on the back roads to Otley.

Café: Square and Compass pub in North Rigton

Stretching Ride (1): Bolton Bridge (23 miles)

This is a shorter ride to Bolton Abbey with the café stop at Bolton Bridge and a great choice for anyone thinking of trying a stretching ride.

Cafe: Abbey Tea Rooms at Bolton Bridge

Stretching Ride (2) Silsden (30 miles)

This route starts on the Ilkley road and then briefly joins the By Pass road to Ilkley before taking the old Otley Road to Burley in Wharfedale. The route takes you through Ilkley on a short stretch of the A65 and then up to Addingham Moorside on a lovely quiet back road which climbs to take in amazing views in all directions. You can take stops on the climb to take photos and get your breath back! Once you reach the top of the climb it is an easy descent into Silsden and the café stop before retracing your ride back over the hill again and then eventually taking the back road to Otley. This is one of our more demanding stretching rides because of the hill climb over to Silsden, which is very steep in places.

Café: Old Post Office Cafe Bar in Silsden (BD20 OPE)

Strenuous Ride:  Hampsthwaite (30 miles) unless someone posts a longer ride

Hampsthwaite is the burial place of Joshua Tetley and also the burial place of a two and a half foot woman apparently! This ride takes you out along Norwood Edge and then through the various Kesling villages to Hampsthwaite. The route returns via Beckwithshaw and North Rigton. It is a hilly route with some great views and some interesting back roads to explore.
