Four Otley Cycle Club members riding the YCF Open 10-mile TT and the pro’s riding the Tour de Yorkshire from Bridlington to Scarborough had something in common today (Saturday 4th May). An interminable headwind finish.
Whilst the pro’s benefited from the finish being moved due to the weather – ok, not by much and they had ridden over 130km (80 miles in old money) – our members riding in the V212 course on the A168 near Boroughbridge had no such gift, having to ride the over 5 miles return leg into a headwind from the north. As ever, this time 20mph plus, although it didn’t seem to bother the faster riders too much, but did result in 26 non-starters out of a field of 88. One bonus at least was that the promised rain didn’t really show its face.
Fastest of the four Otley riders was Gareth Metcalfe with 25:36, Jonathan Hobbs next in line with 26:17, a reversal of positions from our own open event in April when Jonathan was fastest of the two by 1 second.
John Barnett and Justin Dyson, both riding road bikes, recorded 31:46 and 32:58 respectively.
Overall winner was Stephen Ayres from Bronte Wheelers in 21:34. Fastest woman in 26:03 was Team Sportlab’s Sarah Lewthwaite.
Needless to say, cake and hot drinks were gratefully consumed afterwards. That’s in the TT. Wonder if the TdY riders treated themselves to fish ‘n’ chips afterwards. They’d deserve them after the poor weather they’ve endured this week.
