Road, circuit and ‘cross racing. Otley organising and bit of a Brownlee benefit

Not only were Otley riders once again racking up the points in local road & circuit races, but two of our members, ably assisted by others, organised two of those events. And we had a good presence as always in YCCA cyclo cross, the last of the Summer Series. But first, results from a trip over the border to Lancashire for a town centre race.

No, last of the Summer Series!

ROAD AND CIRCUIT RACING

Many of our riders have had success in the CDPP Series races on the Steven Burke circuit near Colne and riding in the town centre at the the Fort Vale Colne Grand Prix on Wednesday 25th July, also organised by CDPP, carried on that tradition.

Highest placed Otley rider was Lucy Ellmore who was 3rd in the U16 Girls category of the Unique Clean Youth event, earning her 1 point. In the corresponding Boys category Jack Coates was our highest points scorer with 6 for 4th place, George Radcliffe two places behind for 4 points.

In the same race but in the U14s Morgan Leeming-Sykes was 4th in the Girls, Matthew Ellmore 5th in the Boys.

Robbie Pollard earned 3 points for 8th place in the Sprint for Success support race, Joe Howcroft finishing in 11th.

The following evening, Thursday 26th July, Tim Howcroft organised on behalf of the club the first event in the Brownlee Summer Circuit Series.

Megan Cullen was 4th for 6 points in the E/1/2/3/4 Women’s race, Beth Zajac earning 1 point for 10th place.

Wonder if ‘8’ is Robbie Pollard’s lucky number as he repeated his race position from the evening before, his second 8th place this time earning him 2 points.

Thanks go of course to Tim for organising and to all helpers who turned out to make the event a success.

Returning to the Brownlee Curcuit Saturday 28th July, Otley riders competed in the albaRosaCC Summer Series #4.

James Wordsworth was victorious in the U16 Boys event, earning him 3 points.

Ben Kettleborough was 10th in the 3/4 category event, winning the last point on offer, and it’s that man again, Robbie Pollard, racing for the 3rd time in 4 days and earning himself 2 points for 12th place in the E/1/2/3 – did you follow that? – won by none other than one of the two athletes who the circuit’s named after, Alistair Brownlee.

And yet another event at the Brownlee Circuit, this time the White Rose Youth League 2018 Thursday League 7 on Thursday 2nd August organised by Jonathan Hodgkins, again on behalf of the club.

Highest placed rider was again Lucy Ellmore who was first in the U16 Girls, with Eleanor Hunt in 2nd, taking 3 and 2 points respectively. Lucy has written about her latest win.

“Tonight I raced in my final WRYL race, as I’m on holiday for the last one and next year I’ll be a junior.

”I rode with Eleanor for the whole race and Mo (Leeming-Sykes) and another boy joined onto our group in the last few laps.

“I ended up on the front on the last bend of the last lap and decided to open up the sprint, even though I was on the front.

”Eleanor and I were about neck and neck, but I just managed to beat her to the line. I enjoyed the race and am happy with how it went”.

Dexter Leeming-Sykes was 2nd for 2 points in the U16 Boys, George Radcliffe in 4th.

In the U14s, Isobel Wilks also took 2 points for 2nd place, backed by Morgan Leeming-Sykes in 3rd for 1 point. Matthew Ellmore was 5th in the Boys.

Poppy Peacock was 2nd in the U12 Girls with Alex Hodgkins and Jack Wilks 10th and 11th in the U12 Boys.

Amy Hodgkins took another 2nd for the Girls in the U10 category and Oscar Hall 4th in the U10 Boys.

Again, thanks go of course to Jonathan for organising and to all helpers who turned out to make the event another success for the club.

CYCLO CROSS

Round 8 and the final round of the YCCA Eleconline Summer Series 2018 was held Wednesday 1st August at King James High School in Huddersfield and, needless to say, Otley CC was well represented. Photographs courtesy of Morgan and David Leeming-Sykes.

Morgan was our only representative in the U14 event, finishing 5th in her category (FU14) and 32nd overall.

Five Otley riders took part in the Over 14 race. Dexter Leeming-Sykes and Sam Howcroft (MU16) were 2nd and 7th in their category, 17th overall and 68th overall.

James Cullen (MV50) was the lone competitor from his family in the Cullen vs Howcroft battle, up against Tim Howcroft, also MV50, in their category. James came out on top, finishing 9th in the category and 77th overall, Tim finishing 16th and 88th.

Tony Wild, sadly not providing one of his colourful reports this time, finished 6th in the MV60 category and 107th overall.
