Autumn is now with us and TTs are becoming thin on the ground so our riders are getting in some last minute competing at 10 and 25 miles. And of course in hill climbs.
Shortest distance first and Andrew Bolton’s 2017 hill climb campaign continues. The first of his latest exploits was the Halifax Imperial Wheelers event Saturday 23rd September on the V9919, a 1 mile course near Luddenden. In a field of 44 riders Andrew was lucky enough not to have to wait too long for his few minutes of suffering as he was off at number 1, recording a time of 7:51.1. The overall winner was Andy Cunningham of All Terrain Cycles in 4:51.6 with Yorkshire Road Club’s Mary Wilkinson first woman with 6:12.8. Not content with enduring the effort needed once in a weekend Andrew rode again the following day on the V491 course between Flixton and Fordon in the Bridlington CC hill climb, shorter than the previous day at 1,100 yards. Andrew, this time off at number 2, recorded 4:45.8, his second consecutive ride taking him into first place in the 2017 Yorkshire Hill Climbs Points Competition with 291 points. Current table courtesy of the YCF. Overall winner was Benjamin Harmer of Wold Top Actif RT in 3:20.1. Fiona Sharp (York Cycleworks) recorded 4:41.8 to take the women’s award. Full results from the CTT website.
Andrew was due to ride the GS Metro hill climb 1st October but the event was cancelled.
Onto the 10s now and our riders were in action over two consecutive weekends.
On Saturday 16th September Harry Hunt and Steve and Tom Broadley rode the V718 in events promoted by Team Swift.
Harry recorded 22:28, 8 seconds shy of his PB 16th July, in the Women, Juniors and Invitation event. The overall winner was Philip Jones of Bella in Sella in 19:10 with Eileen Burns of Ballymena RC fastest woman with 20:46 and Joe Laverick (HMT with JLT Condor) in 19:38 fastest Junior. Full results from the CTT website.
Steve and Tom rode the Men’s (slowest 120 riders) event, recording 23:12 and 24:08 respectively, Tom’s time a PB. The event was won by Craig Twigg of Speedhub in 19:20. Full results from the CTT website.
A week later on 23rd September Harrogate Nova held their 10 on the V212 near Boroughbridge, site of many a battle by Otley members against the A168 Red Wall. Claire Jessop was the fastest of our riders with 26:04, followed by Helen Goldthorpe on 26:51 and Liz Hills on 28:45.
albaRosa CCs Ian Mitchelson was fastest overall with 21:07 and Madeline Moore (TORQ Performance) fastest woman with 23:57.

For many, the YCF 25 on Sunday 1st October near Dishforth was their last TT of the season. Harry Hunt, Phil Mason and Steve and Tom Broadley represented Otley, Harry putting in an excellent ride to record a PB and get under the magical hour for the first time, all on what Phil Mason says wasn’t an easy day. Here’s Harry’s own report on the event.

“The YCF 25 mile TT using the V232 on Sunday was my first and last 25 of the season, the forecast was bad with heavy rain and high winds hence over 30 DNS’s. The forecast was right with the heavy rain but no high winds, there was still a decent breeze which was cross tail out over the A19 so made the ride out to the turn seem easier then the return leg.
The race was won by Harry Walker with a time of 51.52 (29 mph average) I was over the moon with my first “under the hour ride ” of 59.07 (25.4 mph) 22nd overall, making the 6am wake up call on a Sunday well worth it.
“Other OCC riders were Stephen Broadley 1.04.42 , Philip Mason 1.05.39 and Tom Broadley 1.09.48
“This was my last race of the year 2017 racing for OCC Junior race team but I look forward to racing for OCC next year. I would also like to thank The Team sponsors Chevin Cycles , Tom Murray Coaching, Velochampion, OTE and everyone at OCC that has worked hard to put the team together and make it a success”.
Chapeau Harry on both your fantastic ride on on your race report!
The awards were based upon team performance – three fastest team riders times added together – with the Team Swift trio of Harry Walker, Nick Rogers and Mark Wolstenholme fastest with a total time of 2:39:04. Individual results from the CTT website. Race report courtesy of CTT and Snowdon Sports.
This was also the last event in a Yorkshire TT series, the 2017 YCF Points Competition. In this competition Liz Hills finished 3rd in the Women’s category with 684 points, Claire Jessop 8th with 465 and Helen Goldthorpe 9th with 460. Well done again to our top 10 trio – we’re looking forward to a trophy-fest at the 2018 YCF luncheon!
Kirsty and Dave Bradley won the Women’s and Men’s categories with 719 and 709 points respectively. Final table courtesy of the YCF. Thank you to the YCF, in particular Phil Hurt of Yorkshire Road Club for organising these series.
