Half Day Social Rides, Sunday 9th April

Our next Social Series rides on the 9th April have route options heading to North Rigton, the beautiful Washburn Valley, Thorner and Thruscross Reservoir. But that’s not all! We also have a bonus ride to Apperley Bridge which is a new route suited to hybrid or cyclocross bikes – being led by our own (record breaking tandemist!) Christine Bell. Details on all of these rides can be seen below.

All rides leave from the Buttercross in Otley at 9:15am.

Gentle Ride: North Rigton (16 miles)

This route starts with a gentle ride along Pool road and then gradually ascends up to Armscliffe Crag stopping at the Square & Compass for coffee and Smarties. The return leg is mainly descending down to Otley, with a short climb up to Farnley which will be done with plenty of stops.

Bonus Stretching Ride: Christine’s Hybrid Ride to Apperley Bridge (22 miles)

This is a new route we are testing and which we consider to be stretching, with climbs of Creskeld Lane and Old Hollins Hill – both can be done with a bit of a stop if needed! It takes in Pool, Arthington, Bramhope, Rawdon, Apperley Bridge, Baildon, Esholt, Guiseley and Menston – quite a tour around Leeds!

PLEASE NOTE there is a 3 mile stretch of canal pathway which is surfaced but not totally smooth. Probably not one for your tiny tyres but most robust road bikes will be fine. Mountain bikes are not advised as the rest of the route is road surface.

Stretching Ride 2: Fewston (21 miles)

This is ride will test out your climbing legs and will feel longer than the stated 21 miles! We start with the climb up to Farnley and then a sharp descent to the trout farm. A steady climb brings the route to the top of the ridge with views to Otley on the left and Harrogate on the right. The ride goes along Norwood Lane towards Fewston, this road can be very challenging in a head wind so is a good time for you to practice your “drafting skills” by riding in a compact group. After the coffee stop at Washburn Heritage Centre, the route goes to the top of the Snowdon Ridge via Timble village and then a lovely long descent back into Otley.
