We have some exciting routes coming up for the next Social Series rides on the 29th January – and it’s Volunteers’ Ride Choice Day, which this time includes two fab “away day” options suggested by Liz Hills and Steve Moncur. Don’t worry though…We’re still running our usual rides from Otley and have options going to Harrogate (Strenuous ride led by Matt Langdon), the beautiful Washburn Valley (Stretching ride led by Steve Lake) and a 16 mile Gentle ride to a lovely new(ish) cafe stop at High Trees Garden Centre near Bramhope (Ride Leader Karen Llewellyn).
PLEASE NOTE: As the Farmers’ Market is on this Sunday, all of our rides will start from the health centre. There will be someone to direct you from the Buttercross if you are unsure where it is
Gentle Ride 1: Ripley Castle & Ripon (20 miles)
This lovely gentle ride will explore the back lanes around Ripon. You will meet at Ripley Car Park (near the castle) at 10.00. The route explores Fountains Abbey, Studley Royal deer park, Ripon centre, and loop back via Bishop Monkton. There will be a coffee stop in Ripon.
We’ll need to know numbers for this ride, so if you are intending to join Steve and others, please email him on email@example.com
Meeting place: Ripley Castle Car Park at 10am.
If you fancy a bit more of a challenge, Steve may be riding over to Ripley from Otley (approximately 15 miles each way) and has suggested meeting at the Buttercross at 8:30am in order to get to Ripley for 10am. Please let Steve know if you’re interested in this as an option as well (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Café stop: Options in Ripon
Ride Leader: Steve Moncur
Back Marker: Julia Day or Clare Groves
Gentle Ride 2: Wharfedale Wanderer (16.5 miles)
A very gentle ride that which uses the back road by the golf course onto Ellar Gill and then meanders round Menston and then continues up to the top of the Chevin via Carlton Lane. There’s one of our “pointless loops” around Bramhope and then a return via Surprise View and down West Chevin.
Café stop: Le Jardin (High Trees Garden Centre). There is a private garden area at the back of the garden centre where you may be able to lock up bikes. A full range of snacks is available. Open from 10.00am
Ride Leader: Karen Llewellyn
Back Marker: Phil Staniforth
Stretching Ride: Washburn Valley (19 miles)
A terrific ride taking in the delights of Washburn Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). This is a hilly ride but the climbing is mainly on quiet back roads where you can pause if you need to. There will be no pressure to “rush for the summits” because the views are stunning and your cycling friends will be happy taking photographs at the top until everyone is up the hill.
Café stop: Fewston Farm Shop at Cobby Syke Farm
Ride Leader Group 1: Steve Lake
Backmarker Group 1: Sheila Mason
Ride Leader Group 2: Mike Blank
Back Marker Group 2: Ian Helliwell
Strenuous Ride 1: ‘Spiky’ Strenuous Loop to Grassington from Skipton (33 miles)
Join Liz Hills for a 30 mile ‘spiky’ loop via Grassington from Skipton. While not hilly by ‘Tour de France’ standards, this is most suitable for people who enjoy the Mountain Goat or hillier Strenuous rides.
This ride starts in Skipton and goes to Embsay, Bolton Abbey, Burnsall, Threshfield (near Grassington), Hetton, then back to Skipton via Gargrave. Liz assures us that most of the climbing is in the 1st half and the climbs are ‘spiky’!
We’ll need to know numbers for this ride, so if you are intending to join Liz and others, please email her on email@example.com or respond to her Event invitation on the Otley CC Facebook page.
Meeting place: Currently planning to meet at 9:15am at the Skipton Train Station for a 9:30am departure but that is negotiable and Liz will confirm nearer the time. No trains get to Skipton from Guiseley for that time so it may involve driving (unless you fancy a long day out on the bike!). N.B. Parking options are as yet unknown, Liz will look into it but advises you check in advance too.
Café stop: TBC
Ride Leader: Liz Hills
Back Marker: Kaz Jones
Strenuous Ride 2: Harrogate via Fewston
This route goes via Fewston and Penny Pot Lane to Harrogate, providing a real test of your legs before you get your break! Come prepared for plenty of hill climbing on this ride but also some lovely views and interesting roads.
Café stop: Prologue Café
Ride Leader: Matt Langdon
Back Marker: Gary Purchon
