Racing 31 – May 2016. Weekend TT’ing and Household Rivalry.

One of the more endearing traits of time-trialling is that even though you might never reach the dizzy heights of success achieved by Emma Pooley or by Sir Bradley Wiggins you can always battle against yourself each week to achieve that PB, or against your clubmates to gain that few crucial seconds on them.

Or… You can pit yourself against your nearest and dearest – now that’s a competition you’ll probably live day and night!  There’s at least two such rivalries going on in Otley CC this season, one in the Goldthorpe/Mealey household, the other between the Jessops, and both sets of protagonists were in action this weekend.

Helen Goldthorpe and Liam Mealey rode the Holme Valley Wheelers 25 on Saturday 28th on the V237 based at Sinderby.  Both Helen and Liam are achieving PBs this year but Helen is closing the gap, recording 1:07:32, only 88 seconds behind Liam’s 1:06:04.

While that was taking place, Gareth Metcalfe and Chris Yates  were also flying the club colours.  Gareth, holder of club records for men at 30 and 50 miles and consistently recording fast times, produced an under-the-hour ride in 57:37 to record the fastest Otley CC time of the day.  Chris Yates, no doubt feeling the effects taking part in the Slateman Triathlon in Snowdonia the previous week, recorded 1:03:11.  Chris reports it was a warm day with a North Easterly wind which blew as a crosswind making it seem like a headwind for the two laps and that the course was relatively traffic free, well signed and marshalled.

The Jessops, Claire and Greg, travelled East on Sunday 29th to ride the Bridlington CC 25 on the V433 course.  Unusually, Greg beat Claire, recording a 1:09:07 against Claire’s 1:10:53.  Mind you, Greg did have to indulge in a new Giant Trinity TT machine in order to beat Claire.  Remember though Claire, Rule #12 n+1 applies to you as well!

At the time of writing other times weren’t available.
