After moving up a category following his success last week at York Sport Cycle Circuit, James Veitch joined Tom Cullen in Tuesday’s 2/3/4 category race.
After a two-man move went with 23 laps to go Tom recognised their quality so set off in solo pursuit, catching them after two very tough laps.
Back in the bunch, having seen Tom bridge the gap James decided he wanted some of the action so set off in pursuit too but after a few attacks the gap proved too big and he sadly didn’t get across.
In the break, Tom was confident he could beat the other two riders in the sprint. Working hard but keeping something back in reserve he was still fairly fresh with 6 laps to go and from then on attacks came thick and fast but Tom bided his time waiting for the final gallop. Concentrating too much on watching each other, the three were nearly joined by a fourth rider attempting to join the party but they managed to stay away with Tom just missing getting the top spot, but a very fine second place nonetheless.
Behind them, the bunch split as they chased frantically, James riding well to recover from his previous efforts and sprint to a well deserved ninth place to continue his good form and gain even more points.
In the U16 race Sam Howcroft provided Otley CC with more to celebrate, finishing in a fine 3rd place, showing there are up and coming younger riders ready to emulate the more senior riders recent successes.
Hopefully Tom and James can continue their good form into the coming weekend when they’ll be joined by Robbie Pollard in the 71km hilly Bowland Road Race on Sunday 17th April.
Good luck lads!
