A bumper weekend of racing last week was followed by a weekend of cancelled events due, you guessed it, to the weather. But that didn’t deter Helen Goldthorpe and Liam Mealey from riding a Hilly event over the Pennines in Lancashire on Saturday 17th March, although that’s not to say they didn’t experience some testing conditions. Thanks to Helen and Liam for info and photographs.
Helen and Liam rode the West Pennine Road Club Hilly 14-mile TT based at Knowle Green and although Helen wondered if it was wrong to hope while travelling there that it be cancelled because of the conditions – see pic above – both her and Liam did get to ride. Helen had decided that if she did race it would be on full winter bike complete with mudguards, although a frantic few minutes in the HQ car park saw them removed, and not in her skinsuit unless it was used as a base layer, augmented in the cold and wind by winter cycling boots and fleecy bibtights.
Liam comments that they raced in blowy conditions although Helen was subject to a blizzard on her ride, saying “I’m just in awe of the people who managed it on TT bikes as I was trundling round in full winter kit trying to keep the bike in a straight line”.
78 riders were on the start list and perhaps not surprisingly not all started, 23 deciding not to brave the conditions. Liam recorded 36:44 and Helen 42:24. Fastest overall was Ryan Perry of DRAG2ZERO in 28:05, with Amy Gornall of Secret-Training CC fastest woman in 33:15.
