In an earlier report on the Kinesis YCCA Winter Series Points 8 at Myrtle Park in Bingley on Sunday 19th November we highlighted Ruaridh Aylward’s 2nd place in the U10 event. Dad Jonathan has provided more background to Ruaridh’s podium place.
This was a nice course in a mature park, but with few technical sections. The difficult and crowded sprint had Jody Mills of Huddersfield Star Wheelers leading into the crucial first corner closely followed by Ruaridh. Within1/2 a lap both boys had a sizeable lead over the rest of the field. What happened thereafter was some of the best racing for 1st and 2nd seen this season, with the lead swapping, albeit briefly, 3 times with both intent on victory. In the end Jody got into the tricky chicane first which he used well to launch his final effort for the line to beat Ruaridh by 3 seconds.
Jonathan has also provided a report for the YCCA event at Foster Park (also known as Littlemoor Park) in Queensbury, Bradford on 26th November in which Ruaridh once again topped the podium.
As last year this course proved to be difficult in terms of the mud and typical woodland debris causing damage to rear mechs, frame hangers, and an inability to cycle some of the course.
The reduced field started up a short section of surfaced track, and Ruaridh managed to sprint to an early lead into the wooded section. The race looked to be going well, as he extended his lead all the time, until mud got the better of his hanger and rear mech! Ruaridh ran to where he knew his dad and sister were, and jumped on his sisters bike, (she had made a last minute decision not to race), and finished the last 1 1/2 laps to record another win.
All but one of the smaller-than-usual field were lapped.
In the Youth race Mo Leeming-Sykes (FU14) finished 21st overall and 2nd in her category.
