Happily, there’s not been a week go by this season when Otley CC riders haven’t been scoring points in road racing and that’s mainly continued to be the case recently, along with overall success in a cycling league series.
Although there were no points scored we had many riders gaining open-road-like racing experience in the well contested Dave Rayner Fund-White Rose Youth League event Sunday 13th August at Oliver’s Mount, part of the 2017 Scarborough Cycling Festival.
Usually used for motorcycle racing – British speed record holder for cycling Guy Martin has had numerous wins there – the circuit is a public road but is closed for racing, making it ideal for Junior competitions. The whole circuit does include a stiff climb and a fast descent, described by the organisers as “…unlike anything used for Youth and Junior races, hence the shorter times for races. It is however, not for the faint hearted as the first edition proved. It remains though, a true hard circuit to test the future stars of cycle racing for another year”.
Eleanor Hunt, Megan Cullen, Dexter Leeming-Sykes, James Wordsworth, Luke O’Connell, Tom Cullen and Robbie Pollard all took part. Results from the BC website.

On the following Tuesday at Round 20 of the TCDG Race League (supported by Rapha) on the Tameside circuit at Ashton-Under-Lyne Jack Coates took another 10 points with a win in the U14 Boys category, not only increasing his National points tally to 344 but also winning him the TCDG league outright. Jack collected his prizes Saturday 19th August at the Rapha Manchester Clubhouse. For his efforts Jack won money, Rapha bottles, bag and socks on an enjoyable night surrounded by his family and friends. Results from the BC website.
A busy week for our road racers as just two days later on Thursday 17th August riders were in action in two separate events. Tom Cullen rode to 6th place and 4 points in the 2/3/4 category race at the CDPP Crit Series Extra #3 on the Steven Burke circuit near Nelson. Robbie Pollard finished 13th. Keeping it in the family, Megan Cullen took a win and 3 points in the U16 Girls category at the White Rose Youth League – Thursday League 8 on the same night, held at the Brownlee Centre. Eleanor Hunt was 2nd in the U14 Girls earning her 2 points. Jack Coates was in action again, gaining a point for 3rd place in the U14 Boys. Dexter Leeming-Sykes was 4th in the same category whilst Amy Hodgkins was first U8 Girl, brother Alex was 7th in the U10 Boys, Morgan Leeming-Sykes 4th in the U12 Girls, Mark Sansom 10th in the U12 Boys and Robbie Strathdee 11th in the U16 Boys.

Plenty of points for our Junior Men in the 2017 British Cycling Yorkshire Regional Road Race Championships at Terrington near Malton on Saturday 19th August.
BC described the circuit as one that “…combines exposed and quiet roads which invite the aggressive style of racing that has seen a long list of legendary victors” and our riders certainly rose to that challenge with three riders in the top 10.
Our highest placed rider was James Coates who finished in 7th place, earning him 10 points and complementing his 14th place the previous month in the Junior Men’s Road Race National Championships. Robbie Pollard was 9th for 7 points and Luke O’Connell 10th for 6 Points.
A great performance from James, Robbie and Luke!
