Otley CC riders were racing far, wide and on mixtures of terrain over the last week and the early May Bank Holiday weekend.
Three members of the club were enjoying England’s green and pleasant land in the first round of the 2017 Yorkshire Cyclo-Cross Association Summer Series held at Newsome High School in Huddersfield on Wednesday 26th April. In the Under 14 race Dexter Leeming-Sykes (MU14) was third overall and third in his category. In the Over 14 race Peter Middlemiss (V45) was 118th overall and 34th overall. Sam Howcroft (MU16) was a DNF, the result of a broken rear gear, a common occurrence in ‘cross racing. Something for dad Tim to fix after his return from training in Spain.
Thd next event is in Otley at Wharfemeadows Oark on Wednesday 10th May. Why not go along, either to help – always welcome – spectate, or even to ride! Details here.
While we were lucky enough to be enjoying yet another fantastic Tour de Yorkshire, capped by a magnificent win in the women’s race by our patron Lizzie Deignan, Tom Cullen and Robbie Pollard, supported by Robbie’s dad Martin, sailed across the Irish Sea to ride their own Tour in the Sleepwell Hotels Isle of Man Youth & Junior Tour 2017, a 3-stage, 3-day race based in Douglas, and enjoyed, if that’s the right word, their own little piece of greenery.
After the 0.8 mile prologue on Friday, Tom performed well in Saturday’s wet and wind 70-mile stage, winning several intermediate sprints to take the lead in the green jersey competition. Robbie unfortunately was caught up on the aftermath of a crash in the main bunch.
The following day’s 3rd and final stage was due to be 10 laps of a tough, holly circuit but was shortened to 6 due to high winds. Tired from his efforts the day before, Tom had to rely on Robbie’s help to defend the green jersey but it wasn’t to be. Nevertheless, Tom achieved 2nd place in the green jersey competition, good reward for his efforts and Robbie’s support.
The event was won overall by Mark Donovan of Zappi Racing Team.
More details of Tom and Robbie’s race on the IoM can be found on the Junior Race Team Facebook page.

Shorter but nonetheless taxing in the face of strong winds, Claire Jessop and John Churchman rode the Veterans Time Trials Association (VTTA) 15-mile National Championship, promoted by Yorkshire VTTA on the V728 course near Hull.
The Championship is based on VTTA standards for riders at ages over 40, not on fastest times, but those results haven’t yet been published. Claire’s actual time was 40:30 and John’s 46:13. Fastest overall in 30:16 was Stephen Irwin of North Lancs RC. Fastest woman in 33:42 was Karen Ledger of Rutland Cycling Club, setting a national age record in the process.
