Yet more Cyclo-Cross mud plugging at Ilkley CX. And there was plenty of mud!

Let there be mud!

With heavy overnight rain before the latest Yorkshire Cyclo Cross Association Winter Series event at Ilkley Lido and Pool on Sunday 15th January it was sure to be muddy but perhaps competitors didn’t expect it to be as muddy as it was and the volunteers operating the jet washes were certainly kept busy.

Only one climb of any significance was included in the course but it certainly proved testing for all the riders.  As bikes were clogged with mud to the extent that wheels wouldn’t go round and gears wouldn’t work, some riders, particularly those with only one bike or not having the luxury of being able to jet was their bikes each lap were badly affected.  Some had to resort to carrying their bikes all the way up the climb, stopping to try get the mud out sometimes and even giving their bikes an impromptu wash in the stream part way up the climb.

Because tyre pressures were being run so low to counteract the conditions punctures abounded and this meant that two of our riders James Cullen, competing in his third CX race so far in 2017, riding in the V45 class and Greg Jessop, riding in the Novice 26+ Go-Cross, didn’t finish after suffering that fate.  Greg was riding his new ‘cross bike purchased just the day before so a difficult CX baptism for him!

Our younger riders failed much better with a 3rd, two 4ths and a 5th in their respective categories.  Well done to them achieving those results in difficult conditions.
