Otley Cycle Club riders in action at the 2017 HSBC UK National Cyclo-Cross Championships – Peel Park, Bradford

Only a week into the 2017 season and two of our members – James Cullen and Andrew Moxon – have already ridden two races, one being the NovaCross in Knaresborough on New Years Day, the other the Veteran Over 50 race at the HSBC UK National Cyclo-Cross Championships in Peel Park, Bradford.

The champs were split over two days, Saturday 7th January and Sunday 8th January, James and Andrew’s race being on the first day.  British Cycling say of the first day “Soft ground mixed with a number of off-camber sections and slippery descents led to some exciting and close racing throughout the day”.  Although there had been a little rain over the previous few days, with the Veterans Women’s Chamionship finishing just under an hour before and a Veteran Over 50 field of around 100 riders it was inevitable that the ground would be churned up, although maybe not as much as expected.  James commented “Course was better than I expected, nowhere near as scary or muddy”.  And he only fell off once!

Local evergreen ‘cross expert Chris Young became the Veteran Over 50 Champion. Although he managed to do one more lap than both James and Andrew they all do have one thing in common.  All three used only one bike in the event, a feat in itself given the amount of detritus bikes picked up on each lap of the course.

Well done to James and Andrew on finishing the race and of course to Chris Young on becoming Champion.  As well as Chris Young’s victory, another six titles were won and Saturday and a further six on Sunday.  Results for Saturday can be found here and for Sunday here, both courtesy of British Cycling.

Congratulations to the organisers and their army of helpers for putting on a superb event.  Don’t forget, if you fancy having a go yourself at Cyclo Cross the Yorkshire Cyclo Cross Association put on events all through the year.  See their website for details.
