Postponed from earlier in the year due to traffic lights on the A168, the club 30 champs were held Sunday 18th September. And what a glorious day it was too, the riders and helpers enjoying a wonderful sunny and calm morning on the course.
16 riders were on the startsheet but with 4 not starting – Tony Wild, John Buddle, Jon Sharpe and Triangle Series sponsor Mark Scatchard of MAS Design Consultants – that left 14 to face the timekeeper. 14? Surely 16 less the 4 should be 12? That’s because one of the available slots was filled by Harry and Eleanor Hunt on their tandem, riding ‘just’ the 15-mile half-distance.
A possible clash with a Knaresborough CC 10 on the same road and disruption from traffic attending Allerton Park Horse Trials – we’ve no information yet on how many horses were found guilty – didn’t cause any major issues and all went off smoothly.
Gareth Metcalfe was crowned 30 champion for 2016 with a time of 1:11:24, winning The Ian Walsh Trophy. Claire Jessop, who had the beating of husband Greg and managed to circumnavigate the roundabouts at each end of the course the exact number of times required, was fastest woman with a 1:24:23 and fastest on handicap (1:10:37) winning The Howcroft Cup and The Rose Bowl respectively for her efforts. Congratulations to our 2016 30-mile Champions!
Afterwards, riders and helpers retired to Spellow’s Cafe for refreshments, kindly paid for by Mark Scatchard, announcing of the Champions and as is always the case, some gentle ribbing of fellow riders. As the sun was still shining it was a very pleasant and civilised way to end a perfect morning. Photo of everyone stuffing their faces courtesy of Christine Bell.
Thank you of course to Sheldon for organising, to Keith and Joyce for timekeeping and to marshals and helpers Liam Mealey, Christine Bell, Dave Burrows and Peter Yates.
