Ride plans for the 17th January 2016

Is it really already time for our second Social Series ride of the year? At this rate it will soon be Spring.

Our next ride is “Ride Guide Choice Day” – our fabulous team of Ride Guides each pick a route that they’d like to share with you.  It doesn’t even need to start and end in Otley. We have five routes for you to choose from, the only thing you need to do is have a look and pick which one you’d like to enjoy.

Gentle Ride Option 1: Ripley Castle historical tour (21 miles)

A gentle ride taking in the beautiful historic sights of Ripley Castle, Fountains Abbey, Studley Royal, Ripon, Bishop Monkton and Markington. This ride is mostly on back lanes, has no serious climbs and is suitable for most riding abilities.
Meet at 9:30 in the main car park at Ripley (see http://www.ripleycastle.co.uk/visitor_information/location for details). Ripley is 3½ miles north of Harrogate, off the A61 between Harrogate and Ripon.

Our regulars who are signed up for e-mail updates will also get a note asking those who are interested in the Ripley ride to please mail David, just so he can get an idea of numbers. Details will be on the mail, or simply drop a note to otleyccsocialseries@gmail.com and we’ll make sure it is forwarded.

Strenuous Ride Option 1: Otley to Cullingworth (30 miles)

This challenging ride takes us out of our normal riding area of the Wharfe into the Pennine Landscape. The ride starts with an ascent of West Chevin and then into Guiseley and then takes “Sarah’s Cunning Saltaire Cut Through” to Saltaire. We then do our steep hill climb for the day – up by the golf course and from then it is gentle climbing and some lovely descents with views of Baildon moors up to Cullingworth Viaduct. We will cross the viaduct using the lovely Sustrans off road (tarmac) section and then a coffee stop at Coldspring Mill. We then descend through Harden and Bingley St Ives and back to Baildon Moor and towards Otley with a descent of West Chevin to complete this ride.

There are only 10 places available so arrive early for this adventure to the Pennines!

Strenuous Ride Option 2: Otley – Bolton Abbey Challenging Loop (30 miles)

A very hilly ride for those seeking a challenge or to blow away some of those Xmas cobwebs! This ride takes us out of Otley and straight up onto Blubberhouses Moor where you will be rewarded with stunning views of Wharfedale and the Washburn Valley. It then descends to Bolton Abbey for a well earned cafe stop. The return leg takes in Langbar and the Cow & Calf before passing through Menston on the way back into Otley.
